The booking or ID number matters most for mail and deposits. Staff use it to post letters and funds to the right account, so ask for it when you call.
Pre-Arraignment Information Limits
Timing controls how much the jail can share. Arraignment is a defendant's first court appearance, where a judge reads the charge and sets bond. Before that step, the jail keeps a tight lid on details.
Prior to arraignment, the only facts the jail may give are whether a person is lodged and the bond amount. It will not share charges, a housing block, or a release date at that stage. Messages are not passed to inmates unless there is a verifiable emergency. This rule protects due process and cuts down on rumor. The Michigan Department of Corrections runs the Offender Tracking Information System, known as OTIS. The service window closes for those short daily breaks and may close at other times for safe jail operations. Sheriff Zyburt oversees the operation, and Captain Steede serves as jail administrator.
Booking at the Marquette County Jail
Booking turns an arrest into a jail record. Officers log the person's name, take fingerprints and a photo, and inventory property. Classification staff then assign a housing block by floor, based on the severity of the charge and safety needs.
No personal items are accepted for inmates, except court-ordered clothing for a jury trial. The jail supplies hygiene items, and inmates can buy more through commissary. Prescription drugs for a pre-existing condition are allowed, but the jail health provider must verify them first, they must arrive in the original container, and no mixed medications are permitted. A judge sets bond at arraignment, and only then does the app lookup begin to show a full custody listing.
Visitation at the Marquette County Jail
Marquette County uses SmartInmate for video visits. Visitors create an account at smartinmate.com and pick an open time. When no internet is available, a visit can be scheduled at the Sheriff's Office using the visiting terminals in the front lobby. Every visit must be booked at least 24 hours ahead, and there is no fee for an on-site visit.

Visitors must be at least 18 with a photo ID, and the jail runs a record check. Anyone with an open warrant is turned away. No food, drink, phones, tobacco, or packages are allowed, and children 17 and under may not wait in the lobby during visits.
Mailing a Marquette County Inmate

Reading material has limits. Newspapers and magazines must come straight from the publisher. The jail rejects pornographic or suggestive items and any title on the MDOC banned-book list. Books are available through the jail library.
Bond and Commissary Deposits
Money for bond or commissary moves through one vendor and one on-site machine. Deposits can be made at JailATM.com after you create an account, or at the ATM in the jail vestibule. You need the inmate's account so the funds land correctly.
Commissary lets inmates buy hygiene items and snacks beyond what the jail provides. No outside personal hygiene items are accepted. Online deposits go through JailATM.com once you register an account. In-person deposits use the ATM in the jail vestibule. Bond and commissary both run through these same two options, so there is no separate window for each.
Note: Keep the inmate's booking or ID number handy for any deposit, since the vendor and the ATM both post funds by that number.
Work, School, and Treatment Release
Marquette County runs a Sheriff's Release Program. It lets qualifying inmates leave the jail for approved reasons and return. Work release, school release, and treatment release all fall under it. The work pass and day parole page describes the program and its cost of $25 per day for work release.
Inside the jail, inmates can join religious and other programs. The inmate programs page lists clergy and religious-service hours and notes that religious visits are limited to faiths approved by the MDOC.

Housing and Medical Reimbursement
Time in the Marquette County Jail carries a bill. Under Public Act 118 of 1984, inmates must reimburse the county for housing and medical costs. The housing and medical reimbursement page sets the housing rate at $60 per day.
